About Garth Brooks

Certified by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) as the #1-selling solo artist in U.S. history, Garth Brooks has sold in excess of 128 million albums. He is the only solo artist in RIAA history to have six albums top the 10 million mark. His most recent release, The Ultimate Hits, has been certified five times platinum. Garth became the first artist to put out a simultaneous edition of his latest collection for a charitable cause. November 6, 2007 saw the launch of the pink edition of The Ultimate Hits, available only at the Susan G. Komen Web site. His body of work — including the groundbreaking No Fences, Ropin’ The Wind, The Hits and Double Live — propelled country music as a genre to the front pages of newspapers worldwide and the covers of magazines, to the point where Forbes declared on its cover, “Country Conquers Rock,” and featured Garth in a major music piece. According to the RIAA, Garth Brooks is the top-selling solo artist of the 20th century.

The key to his record-setting success lies within the personality and talent of Garth Brooks. It has been said that through the 1990s, Garth’s only real competition was himself. He brought daring individualism and a love of music to the table. His wide range encompasses a variety of styles which include working-class blues, honky tonk, bluegrass and arena rock. His easy-going, approachable charisma was matched only by his fearless willingness to take chances and step outside the lines. He has had an unprecedented run so far, and opened the doors for many more country artists to follow.

Garth has received every accolade the recording industry can bestow on an artist, including two Grammys, 17 American Music Awards, 11 Country Music Association Awards, 18 Academy of Country Music Awards, five World Music Awards, 12 People’s Choice Awards and 36 Billboard Music Awards. He was named “Artist of the ’90s” at the 1997 Blockbuster Entertainment Awards, received the Artist Achievement Award at the 1997 Billboard Music Awards and was named “Artist of the Decade” at the American Music Awards in 2000 and the Academy of Country Music Awards in 1999.

In the midst of one of the most successful careers in music history, Garth retired in 2001, delivered his last record for Capitol Records and moved back to Oklahoma to raise his children.  While in retirement, when called upon by events greater than his own self-interest, he returned to the stage. The latest of these was when the President himself requested that Garth headline President Obama’s Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial. He performed as Barack and Michelle Obama, their girls, Joe and Jill Biden and a crowd of over 300,000 lined the mall from the Lincoln Memorial all the way to the Washington Monument. It was a moment in history when all did the “wave” to Garth’s performance of “Shout” while the President sang along. Once again, Garth was called upon by the network to perform for President Obama’s very first late night TV appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. When the Governor of California asked for Garth’s help, he responded by performing five concerts in two days, where proceeds from 83,000 tickets sold were donated to efforts to prevent fire catastrophes. Portions of the live concerts were shown as a TV special, “Garth Brooks: Live in L.A.” where viewers donated to the organization Fire Intervention Relief Effort (FIRE).

Oct. 15, 2009, Brooks announced that he was out of retirement: ”I am naturally nervous, but it feels good to be out from under the low ceiling of ‘retirement’ I put on myself.”  Brooks has entered a five-year “relationship” with Las Vegas resort developer, Steve Wynn.

(Overland Park, KS) – To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – classroom, character, community and competition. The complete list of candidates follows this release.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School™, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

This year’s candidate class includes 13 student-athletes on teams ranked in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse media preseason top 20 poll. In addition, nine candidates are on the preseason Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook Division I All-American list. Six candidates own cumulative grade point averages of 3.5 or better.

Lowe’s, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce the 2010 Senior CLASS Award™ winner at the NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championship at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore May 29-31.

The 20 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of classroom, character, community and competition.

“The lacrosse candidates represent a diverse cross-section of universities and a wide array of academic courses of study,” said Tom Lamb, Lowe’s senior vice president of marketing. “But the common denominator is a passion for their sport and for finishing their careers as students and athletes at the top.”

This marks the fourth year for the men’s lacrosse division of the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. Cornell University midfielder Max Seibald received the award for the 2009 season and Syracuse University attackman Mike Leveille took home the 2008 honor. In 2007, Cornell goalkeeper Matt McMonagle won the inaugural men’s lacrosse

NYIT Lacrosse Team Builds a House

Old Westbury, NY (Vocus/PRWEB ) February 9, 2010 — The New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) men’s lacrosse team recently spent three days helping to build a house in Elmont, N.Y., with Habitat for Humanity, an organization that provides affordable houses to families in need.

Shop At Lacrosse.com

This marks the first year that NYIT partnered with Habitat for Humanity. For head coach Bill Dunn, the experience was unbelievable for both the student-athletes and coaching staff. “We have done a lot of community service during my time here at NYIT,” says Dunn. “But working with Habitat for Humanity, and building a home for a family in need, really made a positive and lasting impact on all of us.”

The student-athletes braved sub-freezing temperatures and completed tasks assigned by Habitat site manager Tom Baccaella. “Having the NYIT lacrosse team on site for six hours at a time really allowed us to accomplish more than we usually do in that same period,” says Baccaella, noting that the student-athletes donated more than double the normally required community service hours of NYIT student athletes each day. “We were able to move assembled scaffolding, which would normally have to be broken down, and their dedication and commitment to getting as much accomplished as possible really kept the project moving.”

For senior lacrosse player Matt Sullivan, the reality of what he and his teammates were accomplishing hit home when he found out who was moving into the house. “This was truly an awesome experience, a great bonding experience for us as a team, but when we found out that we were helping to build a house for a family with four children, it made all of us truly appreciate the effort we put into the project,” says Sullivan.

At NYIT, community service is as much a part of the student-athlete’s college experience as classes and sports. Annually, members of all 10 NYIT intercollegiate athletic programs spend a collective 1,000 hours on community service projects in and around the New York/Long Island area. NYIT teams have volunteered by mentoring children in schools with sports clinics, reading at neighborhood elementary schools, visiting with senior citizens, and cooking dinner at The Ronald McDonald House.

About NYIT
NYIT is the college of choice for more than 15,000 students enrolled in more than 90 specialized courses of study leading to undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees in academic areas such as architecture and design; arts and sciences; education; engineering and computing sciences; health professions; management; and osteopathic medicine. As a private, nonprofit, independent institution of higher learning, NYIT embraces an educational philosophy of career-oriented professional education for all qualified students and supports applications-oriented research to benefit the greater global community. Students attend classes at NYIT’s campuses in Manhattan and Long Island, as well as online and in a number of programs throughout the world. To date, more than 81,500 alumni have earned degrees at NYIT. For more information, visit www.nyit.edu.
